Mexico
finishes first in Pool A
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 29, 2010 –
Mexico finished atop of Pool A in NORCECA Girls’
Youth Championship following an easy ride
against Costa Rica in straight sets by score of
25-9, 25-10, 25-11. The Mexicans points-ratio
was 2.344.
The Mexicans dominated their opponents with
potent spikes, good floor defense and the
performance and leadership of setter Alicia
Castro.
Samantha Bricio was the only Mexican in double
figures with 22 points. Castro added 7 points
including 6 aces, and Gabriela Zazueta also had
7 tallies all via spikes.
“We played good but could have done better,”
said Castro, “especially in the second and third
sets when we made some unforced errors”.
“We have not had our best game yet,” said coach
Jose Bernal. “But we came here looking for an
excellent result and I still expect more from my
team.”
“We have to accept the loss against a stronger
opponent and we did our best possible,” said
Tracy Fernandez, the captain of Costa Rica.
“Our goal was to reach the 15-point mark in
every set but it was not possible against a team
with a versatile attack,” said Costa Rican
Alberto Blanco. “Their attacks came from
everywhere and we never could adjust.”
