Puerto
Rico advances to semi finals after defeating
Costa Rica
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 30, 2010 –
Puerto Rico outlasted Costa Rica in four sets
(23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16) in the first
quarterfinal match of NORCECA Girls’ Youth
Continental Volleyball Championship. In the semi
final round, the Puerto Ricans will meet
defending champions USA.
Daly Santana compiled 27 points, including three
blocks and three aces, to lead the winners while
Pilar Victoria added 14 points. Tracy Fernandez
topped Costa Rica with 13 tallies. Puerto Rico
had the advantage in blocks (15-3) and aces
(9-4).
“Costa Rica played a very strong game and never
quit,” said Puerto Rican Captain Santana.
“Regarding us, I think we could have played with
more intensity. I hope tomorrow we will be able
to establish our blocking a little bit better.”
Puerto Rican coach, Eric Gonzalez, added: “At
the beginning we made many errors in our attack
and in the blocking. If we can dominate the
blocking we can play with good chances against
any team. USA is a tall and fast team and we
will need the blocking to be there.”
“It was a good match and we were able to win one
set. I think that probably their strength was
the big difference,” said Fernandez, the captain
of Costa Rica.
“Our goal was to make things complicated to
Puerto Rico and we did it,” said Alberto Blanco,
the Costa Rican coach.
