Dominicans win their first Thanks to Strong Serves

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 7, 2010 – The Dominican Republic secured its first win against Curacao in three consecutive sets of 25-11, 25-20 and 25-14 points during today’s first match of the NORCECA Continental Sub-19 Boys Volleyball Championship.

The serves by the Dominican team was the most damaging weapon against their rivals, although in the second set and despite their lower average height, Curacao upped the pace as they did during the day before against Puerto Rico.

On the Dominican side, Julio Cesar Almonte’s attacking skills stood out, scoring 15 points, 12 of which came from spikes.  The other player scoring double digits was the attacker receiver Fransisco Javier Cerda (11).

Osiel Vazquez, Technical Director for the Dominican Republic commented “our team knows how to exercise their power in every area of the game and it truly was a good match. Tomorrow, we go against Puerto Rico and we need to get psychologically ready because that will be a great match.”

Leito Urvin, Technical Director for Curacao emphasized “my team didn’t get over yesterday’s loss and they haven’t had enough competitive activity, with just two victories under their belt coming out of the Caribbean regional qualification competitions -- one against Barbados and the other against Trinidad and Tobago.”

Tomorrow, during the last preliminary round, the Dominican Republic will compete against Puerto Rico for first place in group B at 3:00PM.
