GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 6, 2010 Relying on
impressive blocking skills, the United States
defeated their neighbors Canada in three
straight sets by score of 25-14, 25-17 and
25-11. The match was Tuesday´s last contest for
the opening day at the NORCECA Continental
Sub-19 Boys Volleyball Championship being
disputed in Guadalajara´s Pan American
Volleyball Stadium.
The winning team displayed its attack
techniques, led by Matthew Tarantino, who scored
11 points, followed by Douglas White with 8
points, while Scott Rhein, Owen McAndrews, and
Aaron Russell contributed 6 points each.
On the Canadian side, the highest scorer was
Matthew Silver with 5 points while his teammates
could do little against the superiority shown by
the American players who have the highest
average size in the competition along with Cuba,
both with 1.95 meters.
Gary Sato, Technical Director for the United
States, confessed that he arrived to this
tournament knowing very little about the other
teams, adding ¨I´m very excited because this is
the first international event for many of my
athletes. I believe that Cuba and Mexico will
be our strongest competitors though according to
how the competition progresses, I will have a
better feel as to where we stand.¨
Micah Christenson, Team Captain for the winning
team, expressed ¨we felt a little nervous
because we didn´t really know the level of skill
of our opponents but I felt good with our
performance, especially with our blocking and
defense.¨
Donald Saxton, Technical Director for Canada,
expressed ¨I felt very happy with our team,
although physically, the Americans are stronger
than us. I felt good with our control of the
ball and with passing. We´re in very good
spirits even though we didn´t win today.¨
William Bremmer, Team Captain for Canada,
remarked ¨we were excited and a little nervous;
we wanted to play well and we hope to do better
in the next games.¨
