GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 9,
2010 –USA defeated the Dominican Republic 3-0
(25-13, 25-18 and 25-15) in the quarterfinals
round of the NORCECA Continental Boys’ Youth
Tournament, which qualifies the winners to the
Youth Olympic Games.
On Saturday’s semi finals, the
Americans will play Mexico while Puerto Rico
will meet Cuba, who beat Guatemala earlier
today.
The Americans rotated all their players and John
LaRusch topped the scoring for USA with 9 points
and Dominican Julio César Almonte led all the
scorers with 17 points.
American coach Gary Sato, who is
from a Chinese-Japanese background, was elated
with his team’s commitment to defend well
against the Dominicans. The coach congratulated
the Dominican team “because they put up a good
fight, put some pressure on us and forced us to
play better.”
“We are ready to face Mexico and
now we will study up our plan for tomorrow. I
expect it to be a very exciting match and it
will be a great show for the fans. The local
team has impressed me as they are very
well-rounded and show a lot of discipline.”
