MIAO LI, Taiwan, August 7, 2009 – Dominican
Republic meets USA in the first match of Chinese
Taipei’s leg of the 2009 World Grand Prix, the
premier annual FIVB women’s competition.
Both teams are coming from 1-2 win-loss records
in the first weekend of preliminary pool play in
China and Brazil respectively. The Dominicans
won against Korea after losing to China and
Russia (five sets) in Pool C, while the
Americans scored a win over Puerto Rico in five
sets sandwiched by losses to Brazil and Germany
in Pool A in consecutive frames.
Puerto Rico lost its three matches in Pool A
against hosts Brazil, USA and Germany –the last
two in five sets- and now plays against hosts
Japan, Korea and Russia in Osaka. The other
teams competing here are Netherlands and
Germany.
Dominican Republic lost to China 25-12, 25-18,
25-19 and then to Russia 25-21, 25-27, 19-25,
25-11, 15-10. Then they won also in five sets
over Korea by score of 25-22, 25-12, 18-25,
24-26, 15-10.
The Americans lost to Germany 25-22, 25-22,
25-17, then came from behind to edge Puerto Rico
21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 15-13, before
falling to Brazil 25-18, 25-22, 25-13.
Besides the loss to USA, the Puerto Ricans
dropped their matches against Brazil 25-22,
25-17, 25-17 and Germany 19-25, 25-20, 18-25,
25-13, 15-12.
