LAUSANNE, Switzerland, August 8, 2009 – There
were some interesting moves up and down the FIVB
Women’s Youth and Junior World Rankings released
today, following the completion of the Youth and
Junior World Championships in July.
The Dominican Republic made exceptional progress
after picking up silver at the Junior Worlds.
The Dominicans jumped from 8th to 2nd in the
rankings.
Brazil took over as new No. 1 with a
bronze-medal performance at the 2009 FIVB
Women’s Junior Volleyball World Championship in
Baja California, Mexico from July 16-25, and
gold medals at the Youth Worlds and Junior and
Youth Continental Championships. It is the first
time Brazil has topped the rankings since August
2007.
Germany was the biggest mover into the elite
group, climbing from 14th place in the previous
rankings to 4th after four consecutive Top 10
finishes in the last four major tournaments,
including a gold medal at the Junior Worlds.
Previous World No. 1 China stumbled well down
the table after two sub-standard performances at
the Junior Worlds (10th place) and the 2009 FIVB
Girls Youth Volleyball World Championship (13th
place) in Nakhonratchasima, Thailand from July
3-12. China dropped from 1st to 14th as a
