Cuban Coach Samuels very optimistic about his team

HAVANA, Cuba, August 13, 2009 – Cuban Head Coach Orlando Samuels sounded very confident about the chances of his team during the Norceca-H third round tournament of the FIVB 2010 Men’s World Championship that kicks off this Friday at Ciudad Deportiva Gymnasium of Cuba’s capital.

 

“The objective is a clear one and only: Win the tournament,” said Samuels during the press conference held Thursday night.

 

Cuba, currently 18th in the FIVB World Rankings just finished in fourth place during the competitive World League and is considered a heavy favorite to claim the ticket to the Final Round of the Men’s World Championship in Italy next year.

 

Here some excerpts of the coaches’ statements during the meeting with the media covering the event:

 

Jerry Slijngard, Head Coach of Suriname: “We hope to have good results here and my team will do its best effort to not finish in the last position.”

 

Raymond Wilson, Head Coach of Bahamas: “We have the privilege of represent our country and it is a great opportunity and experience. We are taking the necessary steps in the right direction to escalate the next level with the hope of becoming powerhouses in Volleyball as Cuba and Canada.”

 

Glenn Hoag, Head Coach of Canada: “My team is starting a new cycle. We have many new players and we hope they do their best effort so we can qualify in this tournament. We have been following the performance of Cuba, who did a great job with a team so young in the World League, but our focus will be on doing our biggest effort in every match.”

 

Orlando Samuels, Head Coach of Cuba: “Certainly we have a young team that had a good World League and in this third round we want to recognize three of the players of our runners-up team in the Juniors World in India, including them in our squad. In this tournament we have one and only objective, and that is to win it. We hope our athletes can achieve the objective. Without taking anything from the other teams, that’s the clear goal and no other.”
