HAVANA, Cuba, August 13, 2009 – Cuban Head Coach
Orlando Samuels sounded very confident about the
chances of his team during the Norceca-H third
round tournament of the FIVB 2010 Men’s World
Championship that kicks off this Friday at
Ciudad Deportiva Gymnasium of Cuba’s capital.
“The objective is a clear one and only: Win the
tournament,” said Samuels during the press
conference held Thursday night.
Cuba, currently 18th in the FIVB World Rankings
just finished in fourth place during the
competitive World League and is considered a
heavy favorite to claim the ticket to the Final
Round of the Men’s World Championship in Italy
next year.
Here some excerpts of the coaches’ statements
during the meeting with the media covering the
event:
Jerry Slijngard, Head Coach of Suriname: “We
hope to have good results here and my team will
do its best effort to not finish in the last
position.”
Raymond Wilson, Head Coach of Bahamas: “We have
the privilege of represent our country and it is
a great opportunity and experience. We are
taking the necessary steps in the right
direction to escalate the next level with the
hope of becoming powerhouses in Volleyball as
Cuba and Canada.”
Glenn Hoag, Head Coach of Canada: “My team is
starting a new cycle. We have many new players
and we hope they do their best effort so we can
qualify in this tournament. We have been
following the performance of Cuba, who did a
great job with a team so young in the World
League, but our focus will be on doing our
biggest effort in every match.”
Orlando Samuels, Head Coach of Cuba: “Certainly
we have a young team that had a good World
League and in this third round we want to
recognize three of the players of our runners-up
team in the Juniors World in India, including
them in our squad. In this tournament we have
one and only objective, and that is to win it.
We hope our athletes can achieve the objective.
Without taking anything from the other teams,
that’s the clear goal and no other.”
