Dominican Republic and USA lost five-set battles

HONG KONG, China, August 16, 2009 – Dominican Republic and USA lost five-set battles during the last day of action in the preliminary phase of the 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix.

The Dominicans lost to Poland here 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 13-25, 15-11, while the USA was downed by Thailand 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11 in the action in Bangkok. Puerto Rico, the other Norceca team taking part in the event, was to play Russia also in the Thailand’s capital.

The Poles controlled the play at the net with 26 blocks against 12 from their opponents who had the advantage 8-4 in service aces.

Joanna Kaczor was the Poland’s best scorer with 20 points, including three blocks. Katarzyna Gajgal provided 16 points, with 10 blocks and Anna Baranska totalled 10.

For Dominican Republic, Bethania de la Cruz compiled 16 puntos, Annerys Vargas and Lisvel Eve charted 14 y 13 respectively and four blocks apiece, Altagracia Mambrú notched 11 and Milagros Cabral had 10.

Wilavan Apinyapong and Malika Khantong paced Thailand with 22 and 20 points. Pleumjit Thinkaw and Onuma Sittirak each recorded 17. Foluke Akinradewo led USA with 22 points and Nancy Metcalf (14), Alexi Crimes (11) and Nicole Fawcett (10) finished in double digits.
