IRVINE, Calif. (Aug. 17, 2009)
– Panama defeated Guatemala 3-0 (25-22, 25-19,
25-11) to take third place at the 2010 World
Championship Qualifier at the Bren Center on the
campus of UC Irvine.
With the victory, Panama finishes
the tournament 1-2 and has a chance to advance
to the final world championship qualifier next
week in Guadalajara, Mexico. Guatemala finishes
0-3.
Panama’s Jose Cunningham led all
scorers with 14 kills on 12 kills, one block and
one ace. Domingo Avila added 12 points on 12
kills. Carlos Zuniga scored 11 points on five
kills, a match-high five blocks and one ace.
Ricardo Brown totaled eight points on eight
kills.
Jeyson Flores led Guatemala with
15 points on a match-high 14 kills and one ace.
Oscar Garcia added six points on six kills.
Panama out-blocked Guatemala 8-3
and scored on five aces as opposed to one for
Guatemala. Panama completed 46 of 78 kill
attempts with 10 errors. Guatemala completed 31
of 81 kill attempts with eight errors.
