Canada hits the first blow in Tijuana

TIJUANA, México, August 28, 2009 -  Canada opened its participation in the Playoff Round towards the 2010 Women’s World Championship with a 3-0 victory against Costa Rica.

The score of the match was 25-18, 25-19, 25-22. The Canadians had the offensive control and the blocking to dominate the Central American side.

Opposite Tifanny Dodds charted 17 points, Tammy Mahon contributed 12 points and Britney Page chipped in nine tallies. For Costa Rica Verania Willis recorded 11 points and Angela Willis added six.

“I am satisfied with the result because we could control the game. Costa Rica played a good match and created some problems to us,” commented Tammy Mahon, the captain of Canada.

Meanwhile, Canadian coach Arnd Ludwig said: “The first match is always a tough one and Costa Rica played very well at the beginning. We started some kind nervous but then we grabbed the rhythm. The goal for tomorrow is to maintain the rhythm we had at the end today because Trinidad has a good team.”

“Even though we didn’t win it was a good start. We will work in today’s mistakes to face Mexico and look for the victory,” said Braulio Godinez, the coach of the Costa Ricans.
