Guadalajara, Mexico, August 28, 2009 - Mexico
took advantage of Panama’s weaknesses to give a
present to their audience in straight sets at
the closing of the first day of the tournament
of the NORCECA Play-offs, Group I, a
qualification event for the Final Round of 2010
Italy World Championship.
With the spectators on their side at the Pan
American Volleyball Complex, the Mexican players
didn’t have too many obstacles to win by score
of 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 against a team of mature
men but with little height and few resources to
stop the opponent’s attacks.
The only player whose points went above the
double digits was the more experienced local
player, Ivan Gerardo Contreras, who scored 10
points. In addition, Ignacio Ramirez and Tomas
Aguilera both scored 9 points each. On the
Panama side, Domingo Avila accumulated 7 points.
Jose Miguel Azair, Mexico’s coach: “We made many
mistakes with the serve, but later we were able
to better structure the game since we came here
to win. Now we are going to concentrate in the
very crucial face-off with the Dominicans.”
Jose A. Remon, Panama’s coach: “Our team could
have played better even though we are aware that
we’re the weakest team here. I’m a realistic
about we came here to try to improve our game
and to make a good impression.”
Ivan G. Contreras, captain of Mexico: “With all
due to respect to Panama, we should’ve won by a
better score, but several aspects of the game
got complicated.”
Ricardo Brown, captain of Panama: “Things did
not turn out well for us; in the first set, the
reception was weak though we did better after
that.”
