Canada in comfortable position for the ticket to Italy

Guadalajara, Mexico, August 29, 2009 - Canada defeated Panama in straight sets 25-18, 25-10, 25-14 moving one step closer to securing one of the two tickets available in the NORCECA Group I Play-offs for the 2010 Italy World Volleyball Championship.

The win put Canada in a comfortable position to qualify to Italy waiting for the outcome of the match between Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Despite today’s predictable outcome, the match was an entertaining one and kept the spectators full of enthusiasm as they awaited a crucial face-off later today between Mexico and the Dominican Republic.   Once again, the Canadian team showed that they work as a unit, with effective blocking and a strong attack while taking advantage of the opponent team’s continuous mistakes.

The best scorers in the winning team were Dallas Soonias (15) as well as Adam Simac and Alexandre Gaumont, both with 10 points. The best scorer of Panama was Carlos Zuñiga who charted 10 points.

Glenn Hoag, Canada’s head coach, said: “We wanted to win due to the importance of the game but we recognize that Panama surprised us and now we are going to focus on tomorrow’s game.  I don’t feel like we’ve already qualified until we know the result of the game between Mexico and the Dominican Republic.”

Jose A. Remon, head coach for Panama, indicated: “We expected this result -- the sheer height of the Canadian team is what ‘kills’ us but, we are aware of our skill level; we’re in Central America and we try to meet our objectives.”

Brick Davidiuk, captain of the Canadian team, admitted “our opponents did things that we’re not used to and they surprised us, but I’m happy with my team and our communication.”

Ricardo Brown, captain for the Panamanian team, added “we’ve improved in comparison to our first match against Mexico but, the Canadians are at a higher level; despite that, we are learning from these great athletes in order to help Volleyball to grow in our country.”
