Costa Rica upsets Mexico at home

TIJUANA, Baja California, August 29, 2009 – Costa Rica defeated Mexico 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18 and now both teams trail Canada with 1-1 records in the NORCECA Women’s Playoff Round to the 2010 FIVB World Championship in Japan.

Verania Willis was the top scorer for Costa Rica compiling a match-high 23 points. She was helped by Karen Cope who scored 16 points and Angela Willis who contributed 12.

Claudia Rodriguez led Mexico with 21 points, Cecilia Rios added 16 and Martha Revuelta chipped in 11 tallies.

“We took advantage of the Mexican errors and also maintained a good level of concentration all along the match,” said Braulio Godines, the coach of Costa Rica.

“Thanks to God we achieved the goal of defeating Mexico but we still need to battle against Trinidad and Tobago,” said Captain Verania Willis.

Mexico now plays Canada on Sunday while Costa Rica meets Trinidad and Tobago.

The home team is hoping of a victory over the Canadians combined with a win of the Trinidadians and in that case Canada and Mexico would tie for first place with both teams earning berths in next year’s world event.

There is also the possibility of a three-way tie if Mexico defeats Canada and Costa Rica beats Trinidad and in that scenario the two tickets available for Japan would go to the teams with better points-ratio.
