Guadalajara, Mexico, August 30, 2009 - With a
victory over Mexico in straight sets, Canada
fulfilled all pre-tournament expectations by
winning the NORCECA Men’s Volleyball Group I
Play-offs, a qualification event for the Men’s
World championship with both teams taking home
tickets to the Italy 2010 event.
Even both teams played without the pressure of
the previous day, when the two remaining passes
for the region were awarded, the Mexican team
worked hard to give its fans a third victory but
the northern team played to win with a score of
25-15, 25-18, and 25-17.
The best scorers on the Canadian side were
Alexandre Gaumont (14) and Gavin Smith (12). For
the home team Gustavo Meyer (10) was the only to
score in the double digits.
Glenn Hoag, head coach for Canada, acknowledged
the locals “after the pressure they faced last
night against the Dominicans, and with the wear
and tear both physical and emotional, it is hard
to play so, I’d like to congratulate them for
their commitment while for was it was easier to
get the qualification. ”
Jorge Miguel Azair, head coach for Mexico, added
“yesterday’s pressure really influenced (our
performance) but, we gave ourselves the
opportunity to show the young people here what
it’s like to play at a higher level and that we
have to work harder and be more enterprising
with Europe and South America so that we can get
to their level.”
