TIJUANA, Mexico, August 30, 2009 – Canada
defeated Mexico in five sets 25-13, 25-22,
22-25, 20-25, 15-8 and qualified along with
Costa Rica to the Final Round of the 2010 FIVB
Women’s World Championship in Japan.
Canadians and Costa Ricans now join the teams of
Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba and United
States as representatives of NORCECA
Confederation in the Women’s World Championship
next year.
The bigger Canadians totaled 21 blocks during
the match against only 5 by the Mexicans and
also outscored the host team in service aces
9-5.
Sherline Holness, who had five blocks and two
aces, led Canada with 14 points, Tiffany Dodds
and Tonya Mokelki each charted 13 points, and
Tammy Mahon added 10 points.
Mexican Martha Revuelta paced her team’s offense
with 18 points, all in attacks, Cecilia Rios and
Claudia Rodriguez added 14 apiece and Xitlali
Herrera contributed 11 points.
