PRESS RELEASE 30/08/2009

In spite of loss Mexico showed potential

TIJUANA, Mexico, August 30, 2009 – The Mexican Women’s National Volleyball team finished with a loss to Canada determining its absence in next year’s FIVB World Championship in Japan.

The final score was 25-13, 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 15-8 in favor of the Maple Leaf Team whom had Sherline Holness as their best scorer with 14 points followed by Tonya Mokelki and Tiffany Dodds who both finished with 13 points.

Mexico battled hard showing its potential and without being intimidated by the size of players like Dodds, Mokelki, Alphonse and the power of Captain Tammy Mahon, who finished with 10 points, but nevertheless stalled in the road.

Martha Revuelta, Claudia Rodríguez and Cecilia Rios finished with 18, 14 and 14 points respectively while Xitlali Herrera, formerly the captain of the junior team in the past world championship of the category went out with 11.

The consolation for the national team was to finish with the bronze medal and the fact of having a player like Baja California native’s libero Lizeth Lopez included in the All-Star. In the match, things were bittersweet for the home team, first because despite losing the first two sets, the Mexicans responded big in the third and fourth sets.

In spite of it, it remains some favorable conclusions for the group, given the fact of the absence of players who would have been the difference like Bibiana Candelas or Migdalel Ruiz, at the end the team battled hard with young athletes whom showed big heart and fighting spirit.

That was the case of Cecilia Rios, who played the five sets, and was one of the second best scorers of the match.

The last two tickets available for the North, Central American and Caribbean Confederation (NORCECA) went to Canada, winner of the tournament with an unbeaten record (3-0), and Costa Rica, which finished in second place with a 2-1 record. Mexico closed with a 1-2 mark and Trinidad & Tobago ended winless (0-3).
