Mexico beat Trinidad & Tobago in three sets
CAGUAS, Puerto Rico, January 7, 2008.- Mexico (1-1) took an easy
victory in straight sets over Trinidad & Tobago (0-2) in the first
match of the NORCECA Men’s Olympic Qualifier in Day Two of action.
The scores were 25-20, 25-13, 25-11.
Ivan Contreras and Juan Garcia had 12 and 11 points respectively
for Mexico while Trinidadian Marc Honore had 9.
“I hope my team can get into a better rhythm as the competition
continues,” said Jorge Azair. “I have confidence in my young
players combined with the experience of Ivan.”
“We are paying the price of the learning process,” said Augusto
Sabattini, the coach of Trinidad & Tobago. “But we are getting the
much needed experience.”
Mexico built a four-point cushion at the second pause of the first
set on the shoulders of Contreras and resisted the attempts of
Trinidad & Tobago to get into the match behind some good blocking.
The strong and well located serves sent Mexico to comfortable
leads at 8-1 and 16-5 at the technical stops of the easy second
set.
The third set also was one-sided, with the Mexicans dominating
with their serves and blocking.
