SAN
JUAN, Puerto Rico, July 3, 2006.-
Cuba
became the first team qualified for the 2007 World Grand Prix while
defeating Peru in three sets and winning Pool B of the Women’s Pan
American Cup. The score was 25-15, 25-20, 25-19. The Cubans advanced
to the semi finals and secured a ticket for the premier annual
women’s competition of FIVB. The effective blocking and fast
combinations established by the Cubans were the key factors in the
second and third sets when the Peruvians engaged in a close battle
with their more experienced opponents. Cuba totaled 13 kills blocked
with Yaima Ortiz, Zoila Barros and Nancy Carrillo each scoring 3.
Ortiz had 14 points and Barros and Carrillo 12 and 10 respectively.
