Cuba to contend for the gold against Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, July 18, 2007.- Cuba got a convincing
straight sets victory over Peru advancing to contend Brazil for
the gold medal of the women’s volleyball of the Pan American
Games. The score was 25-14, 25-23 y 25-22.
The Cubans displayed their usual strong attack with kills from the
corners and down the middle mixed with the potent serves of Zoila
Barros and Nancy Carrillo.
The Peruvians showed a brilliant floor defense while the Cubans
thrived over the net limiting their rivals’ chances of attacking.
Peru was coming from winning a big match against Dominican
Republic and will meet USA for the bronze medal on Thursday Barros
and Carrillo led Cuba with 16 and 14 points respectively and
Yumilka Ruiz had 10. Peru had Carla Tristan and Luren Baylon with
9 points apiece.
