Dominican Republic’s men out-dueled Panama
MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 25, 2010 – Dominican Republic opened
with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 27-29, 25-20) victory over Panama in
Pool A of men’s volleyball tournament at the XXI Central
American Games.
Dominican Republic, who had a 16-8 advantage in the blocking
category, had lefty Pedro García as its best scorer with 20
points including four blocks. Jose Caceres added 18 and Elnis
Palomino contributed 12 including two aces. Panamanian Ricardo
Brown led his side with 17 points and Domingo Avila and Carlos
Zuñiga added 15 and 14 respectively.
“Panama played one of its best matches since I have seen them,”
Dominican coach Jacinto Campechano said. “We have some new
players even in the starting lineup. I hope Caceres’ knee injury
is not serious, but we will continue giving our best with him or
without him.”
“Today’s match proved that we are taking our game to another
level” Panamanian coach Jose Remon said. “Taking a set against
Dominican Republic means that we are closing the gap.”
