WINNIPEG, Canada, June 5, 2008.- Team Mexico
blanked Puerto Rico in the quarterfinal. The
Mexican squad outscored Puerto Rico 3-0 and
created the first upsets of the tournament. Set
scores were 25-22, 25-22, 25-19.
Mexico played a very consistent game tonight. They
finished the game with a strong block from the 6’6
player, Thomas Aguilera, his fifth of the game.
This win places them against Canada in the next
round.
Thomas Aguilera led the Mexican effort with 13
points, followed by Irving Bricio and Leonardo
Manzo, who got 12 and 11 points. Ulises Maldonado
was the leader of Puerto Rico, achieving 17
points.
Mexican coach, Jorge Azair, declared: “I am very
happy about this win. We started slow in the first
two sets and made unnecessary mistakes, liking
missing serves, but we played a very good third
set.”
Julio Acevedo, captain of Puerto Rico added:
“Mexico did a very good job and put up a great
fight. We did not play our best but I hope we
learn from this experience and become more
mature.” |
