Peru defeated Canada in five sets
COLIMA, Mexico, June 21, 2007.- Peru prevailed in a fiery battle
of five sets against Canada in Pool B of the Women’s Pan American
Cup.
The solid floor defense by the Peruvians proved to be better than
the strong blocking of Canada in the match that finished 25-21,
21-25, 31-29, 16-25, 16-14 in favour of the South American side.
Jessenia Uceda led Peru with 22 points, Leyla Chihuan and Luren
Baylon each produced 15 points and Sara Joya added 10.
Tammy Mahon and Stacey Gordon had 18 apiece for Canada, Tiffany
Dodds scored 14 and Tasha Holnsess had 12.
“It was a tough battle and a good start for us,” said Enio
Figueiredo, the Bazilian who is coaching Peru. “Our goal is to
finish among the top three in this Cup and I have some good
experienced players to achieve that along with some rookies.”
“Tomorrow will be a new day,” said Naoki Miyashita, the Japanese
coaching Canada. “We made some mistakes here and there and must
improve from that.”
