CHIAPAS, México, June 15, 2009.-
Mexico debuted in the IV Men’s Pan American Cup
with a quick victory against the selection of
Guatemala.
The home team benefited from a
great support of its fans to win by set scores
of 25-16, 25-23, 25-17.
The Mexican squad had several
moments of up and downs but their experience and
playing time in 2009 gave them the control to
recover the rhythm and prevail at the end of
each set.
Mexican coach Jorge Azair
considered the mistakes were part of the
anxiety. “I think the anxiety was too much about
starting the competition and playing at home. We
could make the adjustments in different areas,
and I hope tomorrow we can get our rhythm
because we are going to face a well known
rival.”
Meanwhile, the coach of
Guatemala, Reidel Lucas, commented: “We started
well early of each set, but could not keep the
strength. We hope to get better with each game
and be ready to play hard against Panama.”
Irving Bricio had 14 points for
the home side and David Alva scored 10. José
Gonzalez and Guillermo Castillo were the best
for the Central Americans with 8 apiece.
Before the start of the match the
official opening ceremony took place and it was
led by Ms. Marta Centeno, Vice President of
Norceca and authorities of the government of
Chiapas. During the ceremony it was played a
video paying homage to the memory of Prof.
Alejandro Salinas, who passed away one week ago
while still President of the Mexican Volleyball
Federation and Executive Vice President of
Norceca. |
