CHIAPAS, Mexico, June 16, 2009.- Guatemala
defeated Panama in straight sets in the second
day of action of the Fourth Men’s Pan American
Cup. Relying on a good colective game, the
Guatemalans won by score of 25-22, 25-22, 25-18.
Guatemala had a good performance from its
captain Jorge Marroquin who spread out the ball
all the way and had four players in double
figures in scoring –Guillermo Castillo (13),
Jeyson Nery (12), Jose Gonzalez (12) and Juan
Mendez (11). The best scorers for the channel
boys were Richard Araba with 14 points and Jose
Rios with eight.
Panama offered resistance for the first two sets
but eventually was a victim of its own unforced
errors.
“It is always good to get this type of victory,
and even more when you play against a team that
has dominated our area for nearly 10 years,”
said Marroquin. “We are very satisfied with the
result and now we have to continue working for
our next matches and in preparation for the
World Qualifier and the Central American Games
of San Pedro Sula.”
Meanwhile, the coach of Panama Sergio Ballesta
pointed out “this is part of the process. We are
here with the young talent for the future. We
didn’t expect to go down in three sets, but
that’s part of the process. We hope to have a
chance to meet them again.” |
