CHIAPAS, Mexico,
June 17, 2009.- Puerto Rico defeated Guatemala
in consecutive sets and finished in first place
in Pool B of the Fourth Men’s Volleyball Pan
American Cup.
The Puerto Ricans
established their game rhythm since the first
whistle and only had to deal of strong
opposition from Guatemala halfway in the third
set. The score was 25-14, 25-17, 25-18.
“We achieved the
first goal which was to win the pool. But we
have to continue working hard and correcting
some weakness for the semi final match. We still
don’t know who is going to be, but whoever is
you have to work hard because all the teams here
are new ones,” said Fernando Morales, the
captain of Puerto Rico.
Meanwhile, the
coach of Guatemala, Reidel Lucas, said: “We know
the level of Puerto Rico, its experience and
strength of its game. But these types of games
help us to gain experience and be ready for
future compromises.”
The best scorer for
Puerto Rico was Ivan Perez with 11 points and
Edwin Aquino and Victor Bird had 9 and 8
respectively.
Guillermo Castillo had 8 points for Guatemala. |
