Puerto Rico Handles Mexico

MIAMI, Florida, June 27, 2009.- Puerto Rico downed Mexico 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 on the second day of pool play during the Women’s Pan American Cup being held through July 4 at Miami.

 

Puerto Rico (2-0) was led by Aurea Cruz’s 16 points on 10 kills, five blocks and an ace. Yarimar Rosa and Sheila Ocasio added 11 points apiece in the victory, while Alexandra Oquendo produced nine points. Mexico (0-2) was led by Martha Revuelta and Oliva Meza, who each turned in eight points.

 

Puerto Rico out-blocked Mexico 11-3 for the match and had five aces to Mexico’s one. Mexico scored 27 points off Puerto Rico errors.

 

 “We kind of struggled today, but we look to do better tomorrow,” Puerto Rico Head Coach Carlos Cardona said. “It was a hard fought match, but we stepped up when we needed to.

 

 “Today’s games were closer than yesterday,” Mexico Head Coach Samuel Cibrian said. “We made some tactical changes from yesterday and that allowed us to play with better results. Puerto Rico is a very good team and plays fast, and I congratulate them for the result.”

 

 “We had better serve receive today than yesterday, and we played with a lot of heart,” Mexico captain Migdalel Ruiz said.
