MIAMI, Florida, June 27, 2009.- The United
States improved to 2-0 in the Eighth Women’s Pan
American Cup after dominating Guatemala 25-7,
25-12, 25-7 Saturday evening at the University
of Miami’s BankUnited Center.
Nine different players scored the U.S. Cynthia
Barboza and Jane Collymore each provided nine
points in the victory, while Angie Pressey came
off the bench to added eight points. Christa
Harmotto charted eight points in the victory,
followed by seven from Tayyiba Haneef-Park.
Guatemala (0-2) was led by Blanca E. Recinos
Ocana tallied a team-high five points, all on
kills. Aneliesse Bermester C. and Susana
Alvarado Gomez each scored three points in the
loss.
Team USA out-blocked Guatemala 12-0 and used a
9-1 service ace advantage to keep Guatemala out
of system for much of the match.
“You have to respect the game and all levels,”
U.S. Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon said. “We look
to improve with each game, regardless of the
opponent. Guatemala fought hard and played hard,
and there is a to.”
“We have a really young team, and I am proud of
how they competed against a team like the USA,”
Guatemala Head Coach Julio Dominguez said. “This
match will help the team for future matches in
this tournament.” |
