MIAMI, Florida, June 30, 2009.-
Costa Rica downed Mexico in a tight three-set
match 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 to finish in fourth
place of Pool A in the Eighth Women’s Pan
American Cup held at BankUnited Center of
University of Miami.
Costa Rica ends Pool A with a 2-3 win-loss
record and meets Trinidad & Tobago on July 1.
Meanwhile Mexico falls to 1-4 and fifth place on
Pool A and next plays against Canada on
Thursday.
Costa Rican captain Verania Willis hammered 14
kills with three blocks and two aces en route to
a 19 points night. Karen Cope Charles
contributed 11 points, eleven via attacks, and
Paola Ramirez added nine.
Captain Migdalel Ruiz led Mexico with 15 points,
including 14 attacks, and Martha Revuelta added
nine points.
“I think both teams are very similar and the
score of each set was very close,” said Braulio
Godinez, the Costa Rican coach. “The girls were
very concentrated. I think it was the
concentration that gave us today’s result.”
“We played a very bad match today, our worst
match of the Pan American Cup,” said Samuel
Cibrian, the Mexican coach. “Costa Rica took
advantage of our mistakes, and I congratulate
them in their efforts.”
