USA
advances to final match against Mexico
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, May 1, 2010 –
Defending champions USA will be looking for a
fifth consecutive title in NORCECA Girls’ Youth
Championship when they play against Mexico on
Sunday for the continental gold medal and the
competition’s single ticket at stake to the
Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
The Americans, who have won five of the six
previous editions of the event for players under
18 years-old, made it into the finals by
defeating Puerto Rico in straight sets (25-23,
25-16, 25-18) in their semi final contest on
Saturday.
Sheiby Sullivan led USA with 13 points and
Alexandra Malloy and Mallory McCage each
recorded 8 points. Daly Santana topped Puerto
Rico with 12 points.
“I am really proud of my team,” said USA Head
Coach Jim Stone. “Puerto Rico played wonderful
defense and put a lot of pressure on us. I am
happy the way my team responded”.
About the gold medal match against Mexico, Stone
considered is going to be a tough one especially
trying to stop attacker Samantha Bricio who made
37 points in the semi final match against
Dominican Republic.
“The match was closer than the score reflects,”
said Puerto Rican coach Eric Gonzalez. “Today my
team went into a better rhythm and I expect to
carry it over to the match for the bronze medal
against Dominican Republic tomorrow.”
