GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, May 2, 2010 – Puerto
Rico out matched Dominican Republic in straight
sets (25-20, 25-16, 25-21) to win the bronze
medal at NORCECA Girls’ Youth Volleyball
Championship and the remaining continental’s
berth to the 2011 FIVB World Championship for
players under 18 years-old.
The Puerto Ricans executed 12 scoring blocks
against only 4 by the Dominicans. In serves both
teams scored with three aces.
Daly Santana totaled 19 points for the winners
and Lucia Castro and Pilar Victoria contributed
13 and 12 respectively. Elizabeth Martinez was
the only Dominican in double digits with 11
tallies and Pamela Soriano charted nine.
“Today we really played up to our level and the
match the day before against United States
really helped,” said Puerto Rico’s Coach Eric
Gonzalez. “Our serves did a lot of damage to the
opponent and we could establish solid blocking
at the corners.”
“That’s not my team,” said a disappointed
Giovanni Sibilia, the Dominican Coach. “That’s
the worst we have played in the tournament. I
never imagined we could play as bad as we did
it. But it was one of those days when all things
come out against you.”
