Puerto Ricans Santiago and Acevedo win third
gold in 2010

Mexico, May 16, 2010 – Puerto Ricans Yarleen
Santiago and Dariam Acevedo edged resilient
Cubans Imara Estevez and Ion Canet 2-1 (19-21,
21-19, 18-16) to win the gold medal in the fifth
stop of NORCECA Beach Volleyball at Puerto
Arista, Chiapas.
Santiago and Acevedo, who also
had won in Cayman Islands and Dominican
Republic, achieved their third gold in four
tries as they skipped the Guatemala stage to
participate in the SWATCH FIVB World Tour
tournament in Brazil.
It was their second three-setter
of Sunday for the Puerto Rican pair who earlier
had prevailed in their semi final match against
Canadians Jamie Broter and Elizabeth Cordonier
by score of 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 15-12).
Cubans Estevez and Canet reached
the final match following their semi final 2-0
(21-17, 21-12) triumph over Canadians Heather
Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney.
In the all-Canadian bronze medal
match, Bansley and Maloney edged Broter and
Cordonier 2-0 (27-25, 22-20).
In
the men’s competition, the Cuban duo of Sergio
Gonzalez and Yoendris Kindelán won the gold
medal following their 2-1 (21-19, 21-13, 15-9)
victory over Mexican siblings Ulises and
Lombardo Ontiveros.
More than 3,000 spectators
watched the second victory in a row for the
Cuban pair who also achieved success in the
previous stop in Guatemala.
Gonzalez and Kindelán won their
semi final match 2-0 (21-15, 21-13) against
Canadians Samuel Schachter and Cameron Wheelan.
The Ontiveros beat USA’s Stafford Slick and
Marcin Jogoda 2-0 (21-17, 21-11).
The match for the bronze medal
was a battle where Americans Slick and Jogoda
prevailed against Schachter and Wheelan 2-1
(21-16, 16-21, 15-10).
