Brazil
wins over Canada with sensational comeback
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May
25, 2010 – A defiant young Brazil side made a
sensational comeback after losing the first two
sets to defeat Canada 3-2 (16-25, 20-25, 25-20,
25-23, 15-8) and claim the top place of Pool A
in the Men’s Pan American Cup on Tuesday.
The Brazilian victory by
slight margin enables Argentina to secure a
direct place in the semi final round due to a
better points-ratio. The Argentineans, winners
of Pool C, finished with a quotient of 1.269
(151-119) and the Brazilians ended with 1.105
(200-181). Pool B won’t be defined until
Wednesday.
Mauricio Silva and Renan
Buiati led Brazil with 18 and 16 points
respectively, Rogerio Nogueira added 12 and
Isaac Santos and Gustavo Bonatto each charted 10
points. Canadians Toontje Van Lankvelt (14),
Adam Simac (13), Fred Winters (12) and Gavin
Schmitt (10) finished in double-figures.
“It was a learning experience
for our young team,” Brazilian Coach Rubinho
Leonaldo said afterwards. “Starting from the
third set we minimized the errors and played
with more consistency and more stability.”
“We had a very good start but
we didn’t execute well from the fourth set on,”
Canadian Coach Glenn Hoag explained. “We have a
lot of work to do in our preparation for the
World Championship at the end of the year. But
basically we had a good game.”
