Canada
advances to quarterfinals in Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 26, 2010 – Canada
booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the Men’s
Pan American Cup following its 3-0 (28-26,
25-16, 25-14) victory over Colombia on Wednesday
at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan.
The young Colombian team battled equally with
the more experienced Canadians during the first
set but the North Americans dominated the rest
of the way.
Left-hander Dallas Soonias led Canada with 14
points, while Toontje van Lankvelt and Fred
Winters contributed 9 and 8 points respectively.
Alexander Moreno topped Colombia with 10 points
and Ronald Jimenez, Adonis Herrera and Faver
Rivas each charted 7 tallies.
“We are starting our international season and
playing these games will help us to put things
together,” Canadian Coach Glenn Hoag said during
the press conference after the match. “Colombia
played well for a set and a half and then we
started to block a little bit better. As I said
before this is the start of our preparation for
the World Championship and teams here have very
good level”.
“They outclassed us both technically and
physically and clearly they deserved the
victory,” Argentinean coach of Colombia Horacio
Dileo said.
