Mexico prevails in a battle with Barbados

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, October 16, 2009 – Mexico defeated Barbados in straight sets 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 29-27 advancing to the match for fifth place at the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship.

Leonardo Manzo paced Mexico’s offense with 28 points and Edgar Herrera and Samuel Córdova added 14 and 13 respectively. Elwin Oxley topped Barbados with 20 points while Fabian Cox added 18 and Shawn Simpson tallied 12 points.

“The team of Barbados is improving a lot and is better structured and organized with many potent players,” said Jorge Azair, the Mexican coach. “We still have problems to find the rhythm with our young setters but as I have been saying this is the time to watch the young players and their possibilities for the 2010 World Championship. I am satisfied with their reaction capacity because this is the first time they have the responsibility to represent Mexico without the protection of the veteran players.”

“This is the best match we have played in the tournament and our team is progressing with the competition,” said Ludger Niles, the coach of Barbados. “We always have had good games against Mexico. We won the first set and were in front 22-18 in the fourth but Mexico has a great fighting spirit and came back to win.”
