GUATEMALA, October 22, 2009 – Beach Volleyball
is an ecological sport very appropriated for the
society of this new century which advocates for
the protection of the environment in our planet,
according to FIVB President, Mr. Jizhong Wei.
Mr. Wei made his statements during a press
conference held at the National Palace of
Guatemala, where he is attending the XX NORCECA
Congress as a special guest.
“Beach Volleyball is played on the sand, near
the water or the trees and with the wind as a
factor in the matches. It is a natural
ecological sport,” he said. “You don’t need to
built infrastructure causing damage to the
environment and it’s the sport of the new
century.”
“It is a green sport to be played outdoors with
no needs of halls constructions and in Central
America and the Caribbean islands all the
conditions are given for its speedy
development,” said the FIVB President. “So I
strongly recommend Beach Volleyball.”
He informed the media about his intentions of
duplicating the 2010 financial budget to the
Continental Confederations as part of the new
policy of FIVB oriented toward the strengthening
of the National Federations.
“We duplicated the financial support of our
Continental Confederations in 2009 and I am
going to propose to the Executive Committee to
do it again in 2010,” he said. “Money coming
from the sport must go to the sport and we need
to develop our sport keeping a balance between
elite sport and volleyball in schools and
universities.”
“I am also satisfied to know that Guatemala will
host the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental
Tournament next year where the winner will go to
the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and the top
three teams will qualify to the 2011 FIVB World
Championship,” he said.
