Cuba keeps
winning streak at World Grand
Prix
NINGBO , China , September 2,
2006.- Cuba produced a stylish
performance Saturday to defeat
Azerbaijan in straight sets
(25-18, 25-20, 28-26) at the
FIVB World Grand Prix Ningbo
leg.
The Cubans improved their record
to 6-2 and qualified to the
final round of the event to be
held in Reggio Calabria , Italy
.
Nancy Carrillo was the best
offensive weapon for the Cubans,
scoring 21 poins. Yumilka Ruiz
had 12 and Rosir Calderon
chipped in 11.
In Okayama, Japan, Brazil downed
Dominican Republic in straight
sets (25-22, 25-22, 26-24)
improving its win-loss record to
a perfect 8-0, while Dominican
Republic dropped to 2-6 with
just one match remaining in the
preliminary round.
The two teams had met the
previous week in Macau , where
Brazil had won in the fifth set,
but there were no such dramas
this time.
Sheila Castro led Brazil with 17
points and Mari Steinbrecher and
Fabiana Claudino added 9 and 8
respectively. Yudelkis Bautista
topped the Dominicans with 13
points and Annerys Vargas added
11.
Meanwhile, in Bangkok , Thailand
, Nancy Metcalf scored 23 points
leading USA to a Thailand , the
USA Team equaled its record at
4-4 with a straight sets win
over Korea by score of 12-25,
25-16, 29-27, 25-16. Danielle
Scott had 14 and Tayyiba Haneef
and Therese Crawford each
contributed 12 points. |
