LIMA, Peru, September 8, 2009 – Teams of
Dominican Republic and United States of America
will represent NORCECA Confederation in the
Women’s Final Four –Copa Chinalco which kicks
off on Wednesday at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of
Peruvian capital.
The Dominican squad, coached by Brazilian Marcos
Kwiek, is led by top guns Bethania de la Cruz,
MVP of last Pan American Cup held in Miami, and
the international veteran Milagros Cabral. It
also consists of young promising players like
libero Brenda Castillo, MVP of the FIVB Junior
Women’s World Championship and attackers Lisvel
Eve Mejia and Jeoselyna Rodriguez.
The American Team arrived on Monday afternoon
and has talented players like Jordan Larson and
Alexis Crimes, who were part of the team that
represented USA in this year’s FIVB World Grand
Prix.
Brazilian Team arrived on Tuesday morning and
the squad includes high caliber players like
Captain Welissa “Sassá” Gonzaga and emerging
star Natalia Pereira.
Playing at home, with the support of their fans,
Peru team has veteran Captain Leyla Chihuán and
the core of players like Jessenia Uceda,
Patricia Soto, Yulissa Zamudio and Carla Ortiz
among others.
USA and Brazil will play the opening match on
Wednesday at 17:00 followed by the contest
between Dominican Republic and hosts Peru.
Teams will compete under a round-robin system
and then will play crossed matches in the semi
final phase with the winners advancing to the
gold medal match and the losers playing for the
bronze.
