BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 24, 2009 –
Defending champions Cuba pushed aside Mexico
25-15, 25-13, 25-14 advancing directly to the
semi finals of the NORCECA Women’s Continental
Championship with a 3-0 record in Pool B. The
losers dropped to 1-2.
The taller Cubans took advantage of their size
and overmatched the Mexicans in blocks 15-1 with
Yanelis Santos and Ana Cleger recording four
apiece.
Santos, who also had three aces, led Cuba with
14 points and Giselle Silva added 12 including
two aces. Cecilia Rios topped Mexico with 10
points.
“We achieved our first objective by finishing
first,” said Yusidey Silie, captain of Cuba.
“Now we hope to continue winning after an
important day of rest.”
“By winning our pool we have time to study the
other teams while they continue playing,” said
Luis Oviedo, the coach of Cuba.
“We couldn’t control the strength of Cuba and I
think that was the key for the result,” said
Nancy Ortega, the captain of Mexico.
“I am satisfied with the way our players
received today,” said Samuel Cibrian, the coach
of Mexico. “Now like we have done before, we
will study our next rival Dominican Republic or
Puerto Rico.”
