Dominican Republic prevails over USA in dramatic clash

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 26, 2009 – Dominican Republic prevailed in a dramatic five-set match against United States advancing to the gold medal match of the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship. The contest lasted 2 hours and five minutes and finished 21-25, 26-24, 10-25, 25-20, 21-19.

The win secures Dominican Republic its best result ever in the regional competition after winning the bronze medal in the last four editions and five of the past six.

Dominican Milagros Cabral topped five teammates in double-figures with 20 points. She was followed by Prisilla Rivera (18), Bethania de la Cruz (14), Lisvel Eve (13) and Annerys Vargas (10).

Nancy Metcalf had a match-high 25 points for USA. Cynthia Barboza tallied 15, Jordan Larson and Danielle Scott each contributed 11 points and Heather Bown added 10.

“We played about two weeks ago in Peru and they won 3-1,” said Cabral. “We worked very hard because we were facing one of the top teams in the world. Thanks to God everything worked for us.”

“This is a very big win for us,” said coach Marcos Kwiek. “It is the fourth time we play against them this year and is a source of pride to win a match of this level.”

“Congratulations to the Dominicans,” said Metcalf. “I wish them the best of luck in the final. They bounced back from being 1-2 and played very well.”
