Mexico to battle for fifth place

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 26, 2009 – Mexico claimed a 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 victory over Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday advancing to a match for the fifth position at the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship.

The winners, who built a 7-2 advantage in the aces department, relied on their serves to put pressure on the bigger Trinidadians.

Olivia Meza led Mexico with 18 points and Grecia Rivera and Karla Sainz contributed 14 and 10 respectively. Cecilia Rios charted nine points including three aces. Kelly-Anne Billingy and Krystle Esdelle had 15 and 14 points for the losers.

“Our serves and the adjustments that we made in our blocking to neutralize their strong attack was the key for the victory,” said Samuel Cibrian, the coach of Mexico.

“Mexico battled point by point and we couldn’t keep their pace,” said Francisco Cruz, the coach of Trinidad & Tobago. “It will take a while before Trinidad & Tobago can play at the level of Mexico.”
