More than 20 Women competing for spots in Canada

More than twenty athletes will be competing for a prestigious spot on this year Women’s National Team Roster of Canada as the Selection Camp kicks off this week. On the men’s side, five more veterans will be rejoining the squad in their final two weeks of preparation before their last chance Olympic Qualifier May 22-30 in Japan.


Competing at camp this week for spots on this year’s National Women’s Team are:

Power Hitters: Barb Bellini (White Rock, BC), Amy Tutt (West Vancouver, BC), Tammy Mahon (Holland, MB), Tara Smart (Moosomin, SK), Falin Schafer (Yellow Grass, SK), Emily Cordonier (Vancouver, BC), Samantha Lawrek (Regina, SK), Stacey Gordon (Oshawa, ON), Kim Schram (London, ON)
 
Middle Blockers: Melissa Raymond (Sherbrooke, PQ), Stephanie Wheler (Saskatoon, SK), Cheryl Stinson (Ottawa, ON), Lies Verhoeff (Calgary, AB), Shelley Chalmers (Burnaby, BC)
 
Right Side: Julie Salyn (Binscarth, MB), Tawana Wardlaw (Edmonton, AB)
 
Setters:  Anne-Marie Lemieux (Sherbrooke, PQ), Gina Schmidt (Beaverlodge, AB) Stephanie Penner (Dauphin, MB), Larissa Cundy (Edmonton, AB), Maja Cerovsek (Calgary, AB)
 
Libero:  Annie Levesque (Amqui, PQ), Janna Konihowski (Calgary, AB)

 

Rejoining the Men’s Team will be veterans Murray Grapentine, Sebastien Ruette and Ross Ballard who arrived late last week from their respective professional teams. As well Terry Martin and Fred Winters are expected to return by this Tuesday.

 

Grapentine and Ruette both played in France for Paris Volley who was eliminated from their league playoffs in the semi-finals, while Ballard played in Spain for the Almeria Club Team who recently won their league championship. Martin will be returning from his third consecutive tour in the Italian A2 professional league where he played for Loretto, recently eliminated in the semi-finals of their championship, while Winters will be returning from his final season with Pepperdine University which was recently eliminated from their divisional NCAA playoff championship.
