Niemczewska and Ens, Canadian athletes of the year

Volleyball standouts Joanna Niemczewska, from the University of Calgary, and Adam Ens, from the University of Saskatchewan, are the 2003-04 BLG Award recipients as Canadian Interuniversity Sport  female and male athletes of the year.

 

Niemczewska, a 20-year-old native of Warsaw, Poland, who came to Calgary at the age of four, was named CIS player of the year in women’s volleyball this season, and led the Dinos to their first national title since 1993-94. A 5-foot-10 right side hitter, the third-year Sciences student topped the Canada West conference and placed second in the country with 283 total kills in 2003-04, and was named to the CIS first all-Canadian team and the all-star team at the CIS Championship, in Saskatoon.

 

Adam Ens, a 23-year-old native of Rosthern, Sask. Was named CIS player of the year in men’s volleyball, and registered the final point as the Huskies edged the Alberta Golden Bears in a five-set marathon to claim the fourth national championship in school history, in Quebec City. A 6-foot-2, 210-pound left side hitter, the fifth-year Education student led the Canada West conference in points, kills and service aces, and was chosen on the first all-Canadian team and a CIS championship all-star.
