Argentina goes to Mexico with rejuvenated squad

The Argentine Women’s National Team arrives for thr 2004 Annual Pan American Cup with a revamped team from the one that played in the World Cup last November in Japan.

They are clearly in a rebuilding process and only five players remained in the Argentine side coached by Hugo Jauregui and that include little Maria Vicente, the very athletic captain of the team.

Vicente is joined by four other veterans of the World Cup as Georgina Pinedo, Julieta Borghi, Natalia Mildenberger and Karina Pacheco.

The Argentineans were runner-ups in the South America Continental Championship where they beat the teams from Peru and Colombia before losing to Brazil. They had a record of 1 victory against 11 losses in Japan with their only win at the expense of Egypt.

The South Americans are naturally gifted Volleyball players and will definitely provide a test for the other teams in the Pan American Cup in Mexico.

In the World Cup, Vicente finished among the top-ten servers with an average of 0.32 by set and had 99 points. She was followed by Pinedo and Pacheco with 67 and 63 points respectively.

Jauregui is one of the most experienced coaches in Argentina but he has only been in charge of the national women’s senior since last year.

He previously was the coach of the Argentine National Girls Team U-18 from 1996 to 2001. Prior to that, Jauregui was an assistant coach for the Men’s National Team in 1990.

The complete roster of Argentina is as follows: Georgina Pinedo, Carolina Costagrande, Viviana Dominko, Romina Lamas, Micaela Vogel, Carla Pol, Maria Vicente, Natalia Brussa, Melisa Callo, Julieta Borghi, Andrea Conti, Mariela Robinet, Mirna Ansaldi, Antonella Burtolazzi, Yagi Castiglione, Natalia Mildenberger, Karina Pacheco and Daniela Jacob.
