Cuba defeats Russia in real volleyball show

MONTREUX, Switzerland.- Cuba defeated Russia 3-2 (25-21, 15-25, 26-24, 11-25, 25-23) in a real volleyball thriller Wednesday night here at the Montreux Volley Masters.

 

The three times Olympic Champion finally clinched the victory winning the fifth set tiebreaker 25-23, after saving six Russian match points.

 

In other Wednesday action, USA defeated Poland 3-1 and China won against Germany 3-2.

 

In the tiebreaker Cuba was leading14-12, it looked like the Caribbean team was very close to the victory. But Russia saved the first two Cuban match points and had afterwards six opportunities to win the match. It was finally Cuba who claimed the victory on the sixth occasion.

 

Yumilka Ruiz led the Cubans with 24 points. Zoila Barros added 15, Marta Sánchez scored 12 and Dulce Tellez chipped 10.

USA defeated Poland in four sets to remain undefeated at the Montreux Volley Masters.

 

Ogonna Nnamani scored a team-high 16 points and Nancy Metcalf added 14 to lead four players in double figures in the 19-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-20 victory as the United States improved to 2-0 in Pool B.

 

Metcalf, who scored a match-high 22 points in a four-set win over Japan on Tuesday, added 13 kills and one ace in the victory over Poland and is currently the leading scorer in the tournament. Keba Phipps posted 12 points while Danielle Scott chipped in 11 points.
