USA reserves keyed win over Tunisia

AUSTIN, Texas (July 2, 2004) – Making the most of an opportunity to play, some USA men’s national volleyball team reserves keyed a 3-0 win over Tunisia on the second day of action at the inaugural USA Global Challenge Thursday night at the Delco Activity Center.

Brook Billings scored a team-high 11 points to lead five players with at least eight points in the 25-22, 25-18, 25-11 victory as Team USA improved to 1-1 in pool play.

Billings had nine kills and two blocks for the United States, which dropped a 3-0 decision to Russia in the tournament’s opening match on Wednesday night.

Marouan Fehri scored a match-high 12 points while Khaled Belaid and Noureddine Hfaiedh each added eight points for Tunisia, which was playing in its first match of the tournament.

Tunisia is ranked No. 22 in the world after finishing 11th at the 2003 World Cup in Japan. Tunisia qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games by winning the Africa Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Tunis, Tunisia, in January.

In the first match of the night, Russia rebounded from a 2-1 deficit after three sets to defeat Argentina, 3-2, in a battle of two Olympic semifinalists from the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia.

Serguei Baranov scored a team-high 17 points to lead four players in double figures in the 21-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12 victory as Russia improved to 2-0 in pool play.
