San
Juan, Puerto Rico,
October
10, 2005.-Defense specialist Evelyn
Carrera said her farewell to the
international competition but no so
to the Women’s Volleyball Superior
League.
The Dominican-Puerto Rican player
was the most missed during the
recently concluded North Central
American and Caribbean Women’s
Championship in Trinidad & Tobago.
Her absence also will be notable
during the V Pan American Cup, the
World Grand Prix and the World
Championships in Japan, events all
to be held in 2006.
“It has been many years with the
National Team,” said Carrera in a
telephone interview with Primera
Hora from the Dominican Republic.
“I spent 21 years with the National
Team. I have been playing this sport
since I was 10 years-old and finally
I am tired,” said the 33 years-old
player. “For the international level
is too much work and I feel tired. I
started very young and I have spent
my life in a court. So I decided not
to continue with the National Team,
but I hope to be back in Puerto Rico
to play with Ponce,” she added.
Carrera was part of the Dominican
Team that won the gold medal during
the last Pan American Games in Santo
Domingo 2003 defeating Cuba.
The veteran athlete, who has been
named to work as instructor of the
youth teams, will have to overcome
the anxiety of being out of the
court.
“I had to be in the Norceca as third
assistant but decided not to go
because I was going to suffer
watching the games from off the
lines. But staying here (in
Dominican Republic) has proved to be
worst while receiving the news of
the results.”
The defense specialist plays as
native in the Puerto Rican Women’s
Superior League with the Ponce Lions
“I hope to play with Ponce this
season but they have not talked to
me yet,” said Carrera, who was the
number one in the reserve list
presented by the Lions last week at
the LVSF.
