USA win the gold in dramatic fashion

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 20, 2012 – USA bounced back from a 0-2 deficit to win the gold medal of the XI Women’s Pan American Cup following a dramatic five-set victory (28-30, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-11) over Brazil on Friday in front of a full house at Colegio de Bachilleres Gymnasium of Juarez. It is the second title for USA team in the history of the competition with the previous one in 2003 at Saltillo, Mexico. For the three-time champions Brazil the silver medal was their third. USA’s Kristin Richards wins MVP Honors

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 20, 2012 – Kristin Richards of USA was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the XI Women’s Pan American Cup following her spectacular performance in the gold medal match when she scored 35 points to lead the victory over Brazil. Richards also took home the trophy as the best scorer of the event with a total of 128 points in seven matches for an average of 18.28 per game. Dominican Republic’s Brenda Castillo was the most awarded player during the closing ceremony as she earned the titles as best receiver, best digger and best libero. More  Español

Cuba outduel Dominican Republic for the bronze

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 20, 2012 – Cuba outdueled Dominican Republic in five thrilling sets (25-21, 28-26, 23-25, 18-25, 15-12) to claim the bronze medal of the XI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Friday. It is the second bronze for Cuba and sixth overall (four gold medals) in the history of the competition while Dominican Republic was left out of the podium for the first time. Argentina beat Puerto Rico, win fifth place 

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 20, 2012 - Argentina defeated Puerto Rico in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-17) to claim fifth place at XI Women’s Pan Am Cup. Lucia Fresco had another match-high day with 20 points, followed by captain Emilce Sosa who converted 13. For Puerto Rico, Stephanie Enright and Daly Santana scored 10 apiece. Both teams were already qualified to the FIVB World Grand Prix and this match was also the farewell of Puerto Rico’s captain Jetzabel del Valle.  More  Español

Peru defeat Canada to finish seventh

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 20, 2012 — Peru finished in seventh place after beating Canada 3-0 (25-19, 30-28, 25-21) in the classification round at the XI Women’s Pan Am Cup. Carla Rueda scored a total of 16 points (3 aces) while Clarivett Yllescas finished with 12 and Mirtha Uribe with 10 for Peru. Sarah Pavan was the leading scorer for Canada with 19. More  Español

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 19, 2012 – USA sealed a spot in the gold medal match of the XI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by defeating Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-20, 26-24, 24-26, 25-16) on Thursday.  CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 19, 2012 – Costa Rica defeated Trinidad & Tobago in five sets (25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 20-25, 15-6) to finish in ninth place at XI Women’s Pan American Cup. CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 19, 2012 - Defending champions Brazil defeated Cuba in four sets (27-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-17) to advance to the gold medal match of the XI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup. The South Americans held the advantage in blocks (12-7) and aces (6-3). CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 12, 2012 – Peru prevailed 3-1 (14-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23) against Argentina in a South American duel of Pool B in the Women’s Pan American Cup on Thursday. Carla Rueda and Karla Ortiz charted 15 and 14 points respectively to lead the Peruvian victory. Brenda and Mirtha Uribe contributed 11 and 10. CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 12, 2012 – Late arrival Cuba recovered from a slow start to defeat Puerto Rico 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 25-19) in Pool A of the Women’s Pan American Cup. The winners, who arrived four hours before the match, established an overwhelming margin of 18-7 in the blocking department with Gyselle Silva leading the way with 7. Puerto Rico held a 7-1 advantage in the serves category. CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 11, 2012 – With the Olympics practically around the corner, Brazilian Marcos Kwiek is bringing his full Dominican Republic squad to warm up for the London Games during the eleventh edition of the Women’s Pan American Cup. Two other sides qualified to the Games –Brazil and United States- will be represented by a junior team in the case of the South Americans while the Americans are bringing a mix of seasoned veterans with promising young athletes.
