Brazil Earns Gold with Win over Argentina
RENO, USA (Aug. 17, 2015)
– Brazil lost its first set of the tournament, but came away
with the victory and gold medal at the Pan American Cup on
Monday at the Reno Events Center. Brazil defeated Argentina,
22-25, 35-33, 25-17, 25-21 to finish the tournament 5-0 and
15-1 in sets. Brazil got a measure of revenge for its loss
to Argentina at the Pan American Games. Argentina finished
4-1. Brazil opposite Alan Souza was named the tournament
MVP. Argentina’s first-set win was Brazil’s first set loss
of the tournament.

Mexico Defeats United States for Fifth Place
RENO, USA (Aug. 17, 2015)
– Mexico played strong defense and took advantage of 32 U.S.
scoring errors in a 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 Pan American Cup
victory on Monday at the Reno Events Center. Mexico (2-3)
finishes the tournament in fifth while the U.S. (2-3) places
sixth. The U.S. led the match in spikes (38-35) while
Mexico led in aces (3-2). The teams tied in blocks (5-5).
Twenty of the United States’ 32 scoring errors came on
serves. Mexico gave up 21 points on errors. Mexico’s hitting
efficiency was .264 while the United States’ was .239.
Opposite Daniel Vargas led Mexico with 13 points on 12
spikes and one block.

Venezuela Outlasts Canada for Bronze Medal
RENO, USA (Aug. 17, 2015)
– Venezuela and Canada battled for five sets before the
South Americans pulled out the 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 17-25,
19-17 win on Sunday for the bronze medal at the Pan American
Cup at the Reno Events Center. Venezuela finishes the
tournament in third at 4-2 and will head to the FIVB World
Cup in September to try to qualify for the 2016 Olympic
Games. Canada finishes fourth at 3-3. After the teams split
the first four sets, the fifth set was a battle back and
forth. With the score tied 13-13, Venezuela took the first
match point on Canada’s hitting error, but then Venezuela
served out of bounds. Venezuela took match point two more
times before Canada took its first match point at 17-16.

Puerto Rico Fights Back for Seventh Place
RENO, USA (Aug. 17, 2015)
– Puerto Rico fought back from two sets down to defeat
Dominican Republic, 17-25, 22-15, 25-17, 25-23, 15-11 on
Monday in the Pan American Cup seventh-place match. Puerto
Rico (1-4) got its first victory of the tournament to finish
seventh while Dominican Republic (1-5) was eighth.

Brazil Reaches Pan American Cup Gold Medal Match
RENO, USA (Aug. 16, 2015)
– Brazil swept Venezuela, 28-26, 25-18, 25-20 on Sunday to
advance to the final of the Pan American Cup and set up a
re-match of the final of the Pan American Games just a few
weeks ago. Brazil (4-0) will play Argentina (4-0) in
Monday’s gold medal match. Different Brazil and Argentina
men’s teams also met in the gold medal match of the Pan
American Games on July 26 in Toronto. Argentina won the gold
in that match. Venezuela (3-2) will play Canada (3-2) in the
bronze medal match. In Sunday’s match against Venezuela,
Brazil led in spikes (41-34), blocks (7-5) and aces (6-3).

Strong Performances Carry Argentina to Win
RENO, USA (Aug. 16, 2015)
– Argentina got 23 points from opposite Frederico Martina
and 13 points from three other players and took advantage of
25 errors by Canada to defeat the North Americans, 25-19,
25-22, 23-25, 25-21 at the Pan American Cup on Sunday at the
Reno Events Center. Argentina (4-0) will play in Monday’s
gold medal match. Canada (3-2) will play for bronze.
Argentina got great offensive production from Martina, who
scored on a match-high 20 attacks and a match-high three
blocks. Outside hitters Juan Villarruel and Lisandro Zanotti
along with middle blocker Pablo Guzman all finished with 13
points.

United States Holds off Surging Puerto Rico
RENO, USA (Aug. 16, 2015)
– Playing its second five-set match in as many days, the
United States came out on the winning side on Sunday,
defeating Puerto Rico, 25-21, 25-15, 22-25, 28-30, 15-9 at
the Pan American Cup at the Reno Event Center. The United
States (2-3) will play Mexico (1-4) at 3 p.m. on Sunday in
the fifth-place match. Puerto Rico (0-4) will play Dominican
Republic (1-4) for seventh place. The U.S. men’s team may
have been a little dejected after losing a five-set match to
Canada late on Saturday, which took them out of the running
for a medal. But they did not show any signs of fatigue in
the first two sets, running away with wins. But Puerto Rico
stepped up its level in the third and fourth sets and the
U.S.

– Mexico summoned the energy needed to defeat Dominican
Republic, 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 on Sunday at the Pan American
Cup. Mexico (1-3) will play in Monday’s fifth-place match
against either the United States or Puerto Rico. Dominican
Republic (1-3) will play for seventh place. Playing
with enthusiasm, Mexico led in kills (49-32) and blocks
(7-5) while Dominican Republic led in aces (3-1). Mexico’s

Canada Comes out on Top of Battle with U.S.
RENO, USA (Aug. 15, 2015)
– Cross-boarder rivals Canada and United States battled it
out on Saturday, with Canada pulling out the five-set
victory, 27-29, 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 19-17 in the
quarterfinals of the Pan American Cup at the Reno Events
Center. Canada (3-1) will play Argentina (3-0) in Sunday’s
semifinals. The United States (1-3) will play Puerto Rico
for fifth-eighth place. A tension-filled fifth set saw
Canada reach match point first at 14-13 with a tip from Nick
Del Bianco, but Greg Petty responded with a kill. Canada
reached a second match point with a spike, but then served
the next ball out of bounds.

Venezuela Vaults over Dominican Republic
RENO, USA (Aug. 15, 2015)
– Venezuela earned a spot in the semifinals of the Pan
American Cup with a 23, 17, 20 win over Dominican Republic
on Saturday at the Reno Events Center. Venezuela (3-1) will
play Brazil (3-0) in Sunday’s semifinals while Dominican
Republic (1-3) will play Mexico for fifth-eighth place.
Dominican Republic struggled to stay focused against a
physical Venezuelan team, even though Venezuela gave up 27
points on errors while Dominican Republic gave up only 16.
Venezuela led in kills (47-25), blocks (8-7) and aces (4-1).
Venezuela’s hitting efficiency was .333 while Dominican
Republic hit .113. Venezuela outside hitter Wilner Rivas led
all scorers with 20 points on a match-high 17 spikes .

Argentina beats USA to advance to Semfinals
RENO, USA (Aug. 14, 2015)
– Argentina advanced to the semifinals of the Pan American
Cup with a 25-21, 25-22, 24-26, 25-23 win over the United
States on Friday at the Reno Events Center. Argentina (3-0)
won Pool B and will advance straight to Sunday’s semifinals.
The U.S. (2-1) finished third in Pool B and will play Canada
(2-1) in the 7 p.m. quarterfinal on Saturday. The U.S. team
has only been practicing together a short time and Argentina
took advantage of its weaknesses, particularly in passing.
Argentina led in spikes (54-49) and scored on 37 U.S. errors
while committing 22. The U.S. led in blocks (14-5) and aces
(7-3).

semifinals with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-23 win over Canada on

Brazil (3-0), which is using the Pan American Cup to prepare
for the FIVB Under-23 World Championship, will advance
directly to Sunday’s semifinals. Canada (2-1) will play in
Saturday’s quarterfinals. Brazil led Canada in spikes

Canada scored 17 points off Brazil errors while committing

Venezuela
earns a spot in the Pan Am quarterfinals
RENO, USA (Aug. 14, 2015) – Venezuela assured itself a spot
in the quarterfinals with a 25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17 win
over Mexico on Friday at the Pan American Cup at the Reno
Events Center. The victory assures Venezuela (2-1) of a spot
in at least the quarterfinals, which will be played on
Saturday. Mexico (0-3) will play for 5th-8th
place starting on Sunday. Almost every player on Venezuela’s
roster started at least one set as it led Mexico in spikes
(51-40), blocks (9-8) and aces (6-1).

U.S. Shows New Lineup in Win over Mexico
RENO, USA (Aug. 13, 2015)
– The United States used a new lineup and got better results
as it defeated Mexico, 30-28, 25-22, 27-25 in a Pan American
Cup pool play match on Thursday at the Reno Events Center.
The U.S. (1-1) will wrap up pool play on Friday against
Argentina (2-0). Mexico (0-2) will face Venezuela (1-1). The
pool winner will advance straight to Sunday’s semifinals
while the second- and third-place teams will compete
Saturday in the quarterfinals. U.S. head coach Jeff Nygaard
used a different lineup on Thursday than he used in
Wednesday’s loss to Venezuela.

Brazil Beats Out Puerto Rico
RENO, USA (Aug. 13, 2015)
– In a match that was emotional at times, Brazil took a
25-22, 25-22, 25-14 victory over Puerto Rico in Pan American
Cup pool play on Thursday at the Reno Events Center. Brazil
(2-0) will finish pool play on Friday against Canada (2-0).
Puerto Rico (0-2) will look for its first win against
Dominican Republic (0-2). Puerto Rico kept close to the
South Americans in the first two sets as both teams showed
great fire and emotion. In the third set, Brazil opened up a
15-8 lead and Puerto Rico let the pressure get to it,
drawing a red card.

Argentina Offense Defeats Venezuela

– Argentina showed its strengths as it defeated Venezuela,
25-23, 25-21, 25-21 in a pool play match on Thursday at the
Reno Events Center. Argentina (2-0) will finish pool play on
Friday against the United States. Venezuela (1-1) will play
Mexico. Argentina led in spikes (49-35) and aces (3-1).
Venezuela the blocking 7-4 and also scored on 22 Argentina
errors while committing 19. Argentina’s hitting efficiency
was .389 while Venezuela’s was .276. Argentina outside
hitter Lisandro Zanotti led all scorers with 15 points on 12
spikes and a match-high three aces.

Canada Holds off Dominican Republic
RENO, USA (Aug. 13, 2015)
– A Dominican Republic comeback came up just a little short as
Canada won its second Pan American Cup pool play match, 25-18,
25-21, 27-29, 17-25, 15-13 on Thursday at the Reno Events
Center.
Canada (2-0) will conclude pool play on Friday against Brazil.
Dominican Republic (0-2) will face Puerto Rico.
After Canada won the first two sets and held two match points in
the third. But a combination of errors by Canada and Dominican
plays gave the Caribbean country the 29-27. It held the momentum
and took a 14-6 lead in the fourth set and went on to a
relatively easy victory.

face Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico will take on Brazil.

American Cup pool play match on Wednesday at the Reno Events
Center. Both teams will continue pool play on Thursday when
Brazil will face Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic
takes on Canada. Brazil dominated at the net, leading in
spikes (50-36) and blocks (9-2). The Dominican Republic led
in aces (3-2) and took advantage of 21 Brazil errors while
committing 14. Brazil received balanced scoring from its
roster. Outside hitters Douglas Souza and Eduardo Barreto
each finished with 12 points. Souza had 11 spikes and
Barreto finished with 10. Middle blocker Leandro Santos
scored 11 points.

Teams Hope to Gain Experience at Pan American Cup
RENO, USA (Aug. 11, 2015)
– Seven of eight teams have arrived in Reno for the 2015 Pan
American Cup. The eighth team, Venezuela, is scheduled to arrive
Tuesday night to begin competition on Wednesday at the Reno
Events Center.
Many of the teams competing have young players, or a mix of
young and more experienced athletes.
The head coaches shared their thoughts at the start of the
tournament.
