Bethania scores 55 leading GS Caltex to the crown

 

HWASEONG , South Korea, April 4, 2014 - Dominican Bethania De la Cruz had his third straight game with more than 50 points leading GS Caltex to capture the crown of the Korean Women's Volleyball League on Friday .

 

De la Cruz scored 55 points in the 27-25, 25-21, 22-25, 29-27 win over IBK Altos in the fifth and decisive match of the final series. The Puerto Rican Karina Ocasio-Maplica had 30 points in defeat.

 

It is the first title for GS Caltex since the 2007-08 season and to nobody’s surprise De la Cruz was selected as the Most Valuable Player.

 

Bae Yoo-na  and So-Lee-young each contributed 11 points each in the victory of GS Caltex.

 

Bethania, a star spiker of the national team of the Dominican Republic, had scored 50 and 54 points in his previous two games. Her total of 221 points gave De la Cruz an average of 44.2 per game for the series.

 

"I am very happy with this title and I want to dedicate to all our fans in Korea and my fans around the world, especially in the Dominican Republic," De la Cruz said. "It was a very tough victory as we faced a strong opponent."

 

IBK Altos had won the regular season with a 24-6 win-loss mark while GS Caltex finished in second place with 20-10. In the semifinal, GS Caltex swept KT & G Ariels 2-0 with De la Cruz scoring 28 and 39 points, respectively, in the two matches.
